Tell Congress: Lift Children Out of Poverty, Expand the Child Tax Credit!
Created in 1997, the Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a tax benefit that aids families in financial hardship by providing resources to help raise children. Research shows that families have used this money to cover the cost of housing, food, transportation, and child care. Children thrive when their parents and caregivers have the resources necessary to help all family members succeed.
Proverbs 3:27 teaches us, “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.” In a time where many are just making it through their day-to-day, we have the power to tell our elected representatives, “Do not withhold the Child Tax Credit from families and children in need.”
We're asking Congress to prioritize enhance the Child Tax Credit as the debate around tax policy for 2025 begins. Back in 2021, Congress temporarily expanded the CTC to be available to all children and families with low to no income. As a result, we reduced the number of children living in poverty by more than a third. The Center on Budget and Policy and Priorities that enhancing the CTC could lift roughly 2.6 million children out of poverty.
Still, nearly 40% of babies are living without enough income to make ends meet and about one in ten live in deep poverty. Poverty is not just a lack of financial resources — it hurts child development during the most critical years of rapid brain growth, leading to developmental gaps that can last a lifetime.
Join us in reminding your lawmakers that they have a sacred responsibility and duty to protect the best interest and future of our children. Let's expand the Child Tax Credit today!
