A Call to Christians in a Crisis of Faith and Democracy

Ash Wednesday is a time to tell the truth—about what we have become, what we have allowed, and what God is calling us toward. In this season of repentance and resolve, we will gather publicly on the Capitol Steps under A Call to Christians in a Crisis of Faith and Democracy to pray, lament, and bear witness to a faith rooted in Jesus’ way of truth, mercy, and neighbor-love without exception.

This in-person vigil will bring together Christian leaders across traditions to name the spiritual stakes of this moment, reject the misuse of faith to justify cruelty and domination, and renew our commitment to defend the vulnerable and pursue justice and peace. Come to be grounded, to pray for those most targeted by harmful policies, and to strengthen one another for courageous, nonviolent public witness.

What to expect

A simple, reverent gathering of prayer, reflection, song, and the imposition of ashes, including contributions from:

• Rev. Jim Wallis (welcome and framing)

• Bishop Vashti McKenzie (call to repentance)

• Bishop Dwayne Royster (call to love in the face of cruelty and injustice)

• Rev. Adam Russell Taylor (Spirit of God: a summary of the call to action)
