DC Statehood Now!

Washington, D.C., has regained control of its Metropolitan Police Department but remains subject to the presence of national guard troops and federal policing agencies throughout the district. Additionally, we’re seeing Congress targeting the ability of Washington, D.C., to exercise home rule with bills to overturn the democratically enacted policies of the district.

Proverbs 20:10 reads “Differing weights and differing measures—the Lord detests them both.” We must balance the weight of representation in our democracy. We must demand that everyone’s votes be measured the same in our society. We must preserve the principle of self-rule in our democracy.

Throughout the recent occupation, we’ve seen our community members being attacked for being unhoused or targeted for disappearance due to their appearance or jobs, and young people are being criminalized for being in public. Rather than passing laws to micromanage the District of Columbia, Congress must act to enact D.C. statehood and honor the principle of “one person, one vote” for hundreds of thousands of people.
