The budget bill recently passed by the House and currently being considered in the Senate targets our immigrant neighbors, friends, and family with 150 billion dollars in unrestricted funds earmarked to arrest, detain and deport them. While increasing spending on detention, the bill also increases punitive fees on people seeking asylum and taxes the remittances they can send home. The week ahead is critical to our ability to demand changes to this bill. Tell the Senate to protect our neighbors and reject billions for detention in this bill! We cannot be silent when we know our communities are under attack! We have seen shocking videos of our neighbors, friends, and parishioners being taken by masked men in broad daylight. We continue to see the Trump Administration defy court orders to return people they’ve already taken out of the country without any semblance of due process or justice. Knowing this we cannot allow Congress to then turn around and give the Trump Administration billions of more dollars to target our communities. We have already seen unrepairable damage to our communities, tell Congress to protect our neighbors. From God’s commands in the Hebrew Scriptures to the parable of the Good Samaritan, we have a moral obligation to welcome “the stranger” and care for our neighbors as followers of Jesus Christ. We ask that you join us now in emailing your Senators and demanding they reject the punitive policies aimed at our neighbors. The time is critical to make a difference in the highest halls of power. Join me today in making your voice heard. We need to make sure we are protecting our neighbors! This current budget would spend billions to target our communities while putting large new fees on people seeking asylum, and taxes on remittances. Demand these punitive policies in the budget are changed this week! In Faith and Resistance,
