For the past four months, we’ve seen the state of Israel sustain a devastating blockade of aid, which has accelerated the death and devastation we’ve seen in Gaza. In response to sustained activism and outrage, there has been implemented a program that is woefully inadequate and has led to further preventable starvation and suffering. This new strategy forces people to cross miles of military lines to access aid at sites that are then controlled using live ammunition, where many have been killed by soldiers and contractors stationed at the sites. This is simply the latest in a series of deadly policies implemented on the Palestinian people. This unimaginable continuation of indiscriminate killing within Gaza comes after years of assault on the people in Gaza. Since the heartbreaking terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7th, 2023, we’ve seen Israel escalate in ever-worrying rhetoric and policy concerning the people of Gaza. Independent experts estimate that 80,000 have died between October 2023 and early January 2025. These 80,000 people are also made in the image of God. We value every life lost in this conflict. Still, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the Christians who are currently under assault in Palestine, with the recent attack on the Holy Family Church, that’s been a critical sanctuary during these 20 months of conflict, which has wrought so much pain. It is in the light of these facts and our moral commitment towards the principle of peace that we must demand an immediate end to hostilities, including the blockade and military occupation, and any material support provided by official and private actors.
