It is day 684 of the war in Gaza, the estimated death toll is between 80,000 and over 100,000–approximately 5% of Gaza’s total population. While Palestinians starve, 5,000 Aid trucks wait at the Rafah crossing, and warehouses full of supplies remain stranded in Egypt and Jordan. Severe malnutrition is claiming lives daily and roughly a third of Gaza’s 2.1 million people go for days without eating–266 people have died explicitly due to starvation, nearly half of them are children. Aid workers and organizations are calling out Israel for the weaponization of aid, saying, “The militarised food distribution scheme has weaponised starvation and curated suffering.” More than 2,000 troops now occupy Washington DC–six Republican-led states have offered their guards in addition to the 800 that were called in on August 11th. The Federal Government has targeted 70 homeless encampments for removal; advocates continue to fight for the recognition of human dignity within the homeless community and solutions to houselessness. Undocumented immigrants make up nearly half of the arrests made since the takeover began last week. New polling shows a strong a negative response to the occupation, with 8 out of 10 people opposing the tactics that Trump has employed in the city and 72% of residents supporting DC statehood. There are many hurdles to statehood for the current district, but legal experts have weighed in on how it could happen.
