Someday at ChristmasBeloved, I pray you’re taking time to pause in the midst of all that’s going on. Christmas is upon us, the news is news-ing, and life continues to life. So, remember to breathe. Be present. Pay attention. In this week before Christmas, I’m invoking the words sung by the great Motown legend, Stevie Wonder. First released as a single in 1966, Someday at Christmas was written by Ron Miller and Bryan Wells, and produced by Henry R. Crosby. Over the years, many have covered the song, but there’s something about Stevie’s original recording that always grabs my heart. This song carries an eschatological vision, a hope-filled imagining of what Christmas could one day be: no more war, no hungry children, no hatred. Take a moment to read the lyrics. Then listen to the song with your eyes closed. Can you see the vision Stevie sang into the world? I can. —Rev. Moya Harris, Senior Director of Programs, Sojourners Someday at Christmas Songwriters: Bryan Wells / Ronald Miller Performed by Stevie Wonder Someday at Christmas men won't be boys Playing with bombs like kids play with toys One warm December our hearts will see A world where men are free Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars When we have learned what Christmas is for When we have found what life's really worth There'll be peace on earth Someday all our dreams will come to be Someday in a world where men are free Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime Someday at Christmas we'll see a land With no hungry children, no empty hand One happy morning people will share A world where people care Whoa, someday at Christmas there'll be no tears When all men are equal and no man has fears One shining moment one prayer away From our world today Someday all our dreams will come to be Someday in a world where men are free Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime Someday at Christmas man will not fail Hate will be gone and love will prevail Someday a new world that we can start With hope in every heart, yeah whoa, yeah (Someday in a world where men are free) Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime Someday at Christmastime Someday at Christmas lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
