The United States has historically been the world's largest provider of humanitarian, food and health assistance, even though foreign assistance is less than 1% of the federal budget. This is in line with our national values of generosity to the least among us. However, the Trump administration has aimed to terminate almost all U.S. foreign assistance work. The United States’ decades-old infrastructure for distributing foreign assistance has been dismantled and roughly 90% of programs have been terminated.
According to the Boston University School of Public Health, at least 62,000 additional people could die from tuberculosis if U.S. foreign aid does not resume by the end of the year. Members of Congress need to know that their constituents care about this issue. We cannot let millions of lives and livelihoods supported by U.S. foreign assistance be sacrificed for political schemes.
Take a minute to ask your senators and representative to speak up for continued investment in U.S. foreign assistance!
